This is the official Web site of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, created in 2002 by the nonprofit MyGoodDeed Inc., with the assistance of more than 22 9/11 family member and support organizations, and the national service community.
History and Origins
After a seven year effort led by MyGoodDeed and the 9/11 community -- supported by Republicans, Independents and Democrats alike -- on September 10, 2009, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation that officially designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Earlier in 2009, on April 21, President Obama signed legislation (the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act) that for the first time authorized the establishment of 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
How to Participate
You can participate in this important observance by posting your plans to perform a good deed or service project on 9/11 or on another day of your choosing. Feel free to browse our site for suggestions of things to do, toolkits, links to our many nonprofit resource organizations, and the latest news. You can also follow the us on Twitter (911 Day of Service ) and join the 9/11 Day of Service Facebook fan page.
Then, during the course of the year, continue keeping your eyes open for people who may need a helping hand, and assist if you can. It's all about keeping alive the remarkable spirit of unity and service that we all shared after the 9/11 attacks.
What you decide to do, and who you help, is entirely up to you.
Volunteer your time (you can search here for volunteer opportunities in your own area). Donate to a charity. Give something away like a winter coat, shoes, or older pair of eyeglasses. Help a friend, relative, or neighbor. Suggest to your employer or faith-based organization that they plan service activities on 9/11 next year. Or if you are a teacher, get your students involved using some of our lesson plans and toolkits. Organizing service activities can be a very positive and constructive way to observe 9/11.
Please be sure to post your good deed or service plans on our site for others to read. We only ask that you do not post anything that would be inappropriate, or offensive to others, or make partisan political statements. Use this space to contribute something constructive and helpful. We reserve the right to remove your post and permanently block your account if you violate the spirit of this priviledge. You must also provide us with a valid email to post a plan or comment.
Help us forever remember and honor in a positive way those lost and injured on 9/11 and the many who rose in service following the attacks.
