This is the official website of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, conceived in 2002 by the nonprofit MyGoodDeed Inc., with the assistance of many 9/11 family member and support organizations and the national service community.
History and Origins
MyGoodDeed, which represents the interests of many 9/11 organizations, was the first group to formally call for September 11 to be designated as a federally recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. Progress was made early when, in 2002, President George W. Bush declared September 11 "Patriot Day" to honor both the victims and heroes of the September 11 attacks, and highlighted the spirit of service by issuing a Call to Service and launching USA Freedom Corps. In 2008, President Bush amended the Patriot Day proclamation to specifically include "volunteering" as an appropriate form of remembrance. A year later, the U.S. Congress, in a bi-partisan action, passed the Edward M. Kennedy "ServeAmerica" Act, which for the first time authorized the President of the United States to formally designate 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. President Barack Obama subsequently launched United We Serve, a national service initiative that culminated on September 11, 2009. President Obama amended the Patriot Day proclamation on September 10, 2009, to officially and permanently make 9/11 a National Day of Service and Remembrance, as requested by Congress and the 9/11 community.
How to Participate
9/11 is a voluntary service initiative, which means you can do anything you feel is appropriate to reflect, remember and serve on that day. You can take positive action in countless ways: adopt a charity, volunteer, donate to a cause of your choice, and even perform good deeds or service activities. Our hope is that you'll do more than just engage in service on 9/11. You'll take the opportunity to make a longer-term commitment to support a cause or organization that is close to your heart. If you are an educator or mentor, we hope you'll teach your students about the 9/11 Service Initiative and inspire them to get involved in service activities as well. It's all about keeping alive the remarkable spirit of unity and service that we all shared after the 9/11 attacks.
Please be sure to share your service plans or good deeds here on our site or on our Facebook or Twitter pages. We only ask that you do not post anything that would be inappropriate, or offensive to others, or make partisan political statements. Use this space to contribute something constructive and helpful. We reserve the right to remove your post and permanently block your account if you violate the spirit of this priviledge. You must also provide us with a valid email to post a plan or comment. Help us forever remember and honor in a positive way those lost and injured on 9/11 and the many who rose in service following the attacks.
